Why I Wrote This Article on Holistic Doulas in Modern Birth Care

Pregnancy and birth today involve more information, more testing, and more medical options than ever before.
While access to care has expanded, I see many families feeling quietly overwhelmed, unsure how to navigate the system in a way that actually aligns with their values, nervous systems, and lived experiences.
I wrote this article for BRAINZ Magazine because I believe holistic doulas are needed now more than ever, not because modern maternity care is failing, but because it was never designed to meet the full emotional, relational, and decision-making needs of families during one of the most vulnerable transitions of their lives.
In my work supporting people through fertility challenges, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and loss, I’ve seen how much difference it makes when someone has consistent, non-medical support. Someone who has time. Someone who can explain options without pressure. Someone who can help regulate stress, process fear, and hold space for the emotional layers of this journey alongside the medical ones.
Holistic doulas don’t replace medical care. They complement it. They help bridge the gap between information and understanding, between protocols and personal values, and between systems and the human experience moving through them.
This article explores why holistic doulas play such an essential role in today’s birth landscape, how they support informed confidence rather than just informed consent, and why so many people feel called into this work as a meaningful career transition.

If this topic resonates with you, it often speaks to something deeper, a longing for care that honours the body, mind, and spirit. That is the foundation of the work we teach at By the Moon.
