One of the most common questions I hear from both new and experienced doulas is:

“Where can I get professional liability insurance?”

For the past couple of years this has been a challenge within the doula profession in Canada. Insurance options have been limited, and many doulas have struggled to find coverage that properly reflects the scope of their work.

Because of this ongoing concern within our community, I recently reached out to BMS Canada Risk Services to ask whether they might be open to expanding insurance options specifically for doulas.

After connecting with their team, they confirmed that professional liability insurance for doulas is available through the International Institute for Complementary Therapists (IICT).

Professional Liability Insurance for Doulas

Doulas can access insurance through BMS Canada Risk Services by becoming a member of IICT (International Institute for Complementary Therapists).

Once registered as an IICT member, doulas can apply for liability insurance under their program.

At the time of writing, the annual premium begins around $532 per year, though rates may vary depending on the specific coverage selected. Note that BMS Canada Risk Services also provides coverage for most holistic healing modalities including reflexology and Reiki so multiple modality practicing doulas can get their coverage in one policy.

BMS has confirmed that doula services will be formally added to their practitioner categories, making this a clearer and more accessible option for those working in the field.

Do Doulas Need Insurance in Canada?

While doulas are non-medical support professionals, many hospitals, birth centres, and clients appreciate knowing that a doula carries professional liability insurance.

Insurance can help provide protection for situations such as:

  • Professional liability claims

  • Allegations of negligence

  • Legal defense costs related to your professional services

Having coverage can also give doulas greater peace of mind as they build their practice.

If you decide to join IICT, they offer a referral program that provides a small benefit to both parties.

Using the referral link below gives $20 USD off your membership, and IICT provides a small referral credit in return. (Note that IICT and BMS support Canadian and US members).

Supporting the Doula Profession in Canada

Insurance for doulas in Canada is still evolving, and I will continue advocating for clearer and more accessible options for our graduates.

As the profession grows, it becomes increasingly important that insurance providers understand the true nature of doula work - emotional support, education, advocacy, and non-medical care.

I will continue to share updates about additional insurance options as they become available in the future.
