From Law Clerk to Holistic Practitioner: Maegan Grills' Journey with By the Moon

Maegan Grills, Holistic Reproductive Practitioner and Reiki Master in Belleville, Ontario

For years, Maegan Grills worked as a law clerk, supporting people through some of life's most challenging and uncertain moments.

The work required professionalism, patience, and the ability to listen to people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Those skills would eventually become an important part of her work as a holistic practitioner. But at the time, the environment was taking a toll.

“I was feeling so exhausted, unregulated, and not fulfilled,” Maegan recalls. “I wanted to better regulate my nervous system, and in that, I found this work.”

Today, Maegan is a Holistic Reproductive Practitioner and Reiki Master based in Belleville, Ontario. Through her practice, Maegan Grills HRP, she combines reflexology, Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), Reiki, and Full Spectrum Doula support to care for people navigating fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, pregnancy loss, termination, and overall holistic wellness. Her work centers on helping women feel cared for, supported, and heard through every season of their lives.

Her path from law clerk to full-time practitioner did not begin with a detailed business plan. It began during maternity leave, with a newborn who would not sleep and one clear thought: I need to know how to do Reiki.

A Desire to Support Her Baby

Maegan had received Reiki as a teenager and had always felt drawn to Reiki, crystals, and holistic practices. Until becoming a mother, however, she had never seriously considered learning to practise it herself.

One night, while trying to help her baby settle, that changed.

She began searching for someone who taught Reiki and discovered that a former student from her high school had completed training through By the Moon. Maegan initially enrolled simply because she wanted to learn Reiki and use it to support her baby.

Once she began, she wanted to understand more.

After connecting with Michelle Stroud, founder of By the Moon, Maegan decided to continue her education in reflexology and Full Spectrum Doula care as part of the Holistic Reproductive Practitioner training.

“I thought, ‘Why not take all of it?’” she says.

At the time, reflexology was still unfamiliar to her, and becoming a doula had never been part of her original plan. Yet the training began to feel increasingly aligned with her own experiences and the kind of care she wanted to offer.

After having her baby, Maegan and her husband believed they were unlikely to expand their family further. Doula training gave her a meaningful way to remain connected to fertility, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experiences while supporting others through their own reproductive journeys.

Learning in a Supportive Space

Beginning the program while caring for a newborn brought understandable hesitation.

Maegan questioned whether she would have the time and mental capacity to give the training what it required. She also struggled with imposter syndrome and wondered whether she would truly be able to do the work.

What surprised her most wasn't the amount she learned… it was the way she felt throughout the experience.

“I was most surprised by the support and the non-judgment from the teachers,” she says. “The way they taught the course really embodied what they were teaching. I felt heard, supported, and cared for during the training.”

One conversation with Michelle had a particularly lasting impact.

As Maegan began practicing Reiki, she worried about what clients might expect from her. She felt pressure to receive messages, see something significant, or offer a profound insight at the end of every session.

She brought those concerns to Michelle, whose response was simple:

“Reiki is enough.”

For Maegan, those words lifted an enormous weight. She no longer felt that she had to prove herself or produce a particular outcome. She could trust the practice and allow the client's experience to be enough.

That lesson continues to shape the way she works today.

From Evenings and Weekends to Full-Time Practice

Maegan began building her practice while still working full-time at the law firm.

Her first reflexology clients came through a clinic in Foxboro, where the clinic owner helped her gain experience by referring clients to her. She worked at the law firm from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., then offered reflexology and Reiki sessions during evenings and weekends.

It was a demanding schedule, but it gave her the opportunity to develop her skills, build relationships, and gradually establish her practice.

After approximately a year and a half, she reduced her hours at the law firm and began opening her calendar on Mondays and Tuesdays while continuing to see clients after work.

Then, in June 2026, she made the leap.

Maegan left her career as a law clerk and stepped into her holistic practice full-time.

Her calendar is now open Monday through Friday, and her business continues to evolve, offering a growing range of services designed to support women's overall health and well-being.

The transition may appear bold from the outside, but it was built slowly. One client, one appointment, and one carefully considered step at a time.

Creating a Space Where Women Feel Heard

At the center of Maegan's work is a clear mission: to ensure that women feel cared for, supported, and heard throughout every season of life.

Some clients come to her seeking support with stress or nervous system regulation. Others are preparing for conception, moving through pregnancy, navigating loss, recovering postpartum, or simply looking to support their overall well-being.

Regardless of what brings them through the door, Maegan wants each person to leave feeling lighter.

Her approach is not about claiming to have every answer or promising to fix what someone is experiencing. It is about listening deeply, offering thoughtful care, and creating enough safety for clients to feel what they need to feel.

Her previous career prepared her for this in ways she never expected.

During her time at the law firm, Maegan regularly completed client intakes. She learned how to remain professional while listening to people share difficult, deeply personal, and often painful experiences.

“Listening to someone in a professional setting while they are talking about or going through a very vulnerable part of their life has translated and helped me in my practice today,” she explains.

The training at By the Moon deepened that ability to listen without immediately trying to fill the silence, remove the discomfort, or make an emotion disappear.

“I realized that it is okay to sit in the silence,” she says. “It is important to let the emotions flow and release.”

Honoring the Most Vulnerable Moments

One client experience remains especially meaningful to Maegan.

A woman came to her while navigating a traumatic pregnancy loss following a blighted ovum. The experience had included painful appointments, uncertainty, and heartbreak. A few days before an appointment that would confirm whether she was still technically pregnant, the client received reflexology and Reiki from Maegan.

The intention during the session was release.

As the Reiki continued, Maegan sensed a shift. The client experienced an immediate and powerful emotional release, a moment Maegan describes as raw, beautiful, and deeply moving. For her, it affirmed the sacred responsibility that comes with this work.

“It is a huge honor to be trusted by someone enough for them to be their most vulnerable and fully open, and to be by their side during those moments,” she says. “I will forever be grateful to all of my clients who let me in and trust me with their emotions and experiences.”

The experience also reflects an important part of Maegan's philosophy. She does not position herself as someone who removes grief or fixes another person's pain. Instead, she offers a compassionate space where clients can feel supported as they move through it.

Practicing the Care She Offers Others

Supporting people through emotionally significant experiences requires Maegan to remain attentive to her own well-being.

Her practice has made her more aware of her nervous system and more intentional about self-care. She understands that caring for herself allows her to show up more fully for both her clients and her family.

She credits much of her grounding to the community around her.

Relationships with other holistic practitioners and entrepreneurs give her space to exchange ideas, talk honestly about the challenges of running a business, and receive care through shared services. She is also supported by her husband, parents, and friends.

Yoga, exercise, and intentionally setting aside time for herself have become essential rather than optional.

That awareness is shaping the kind of business she hopes to build. Not one where success comes at the expense of her own health, but one with room for both meaningful work and a balanced life.

The Vision Moving Forward

As Maegan settles into full-time practice, her vision is centered on consistency, accessibility, and balance.

She hopes to maintain a steady calendar while protecting time to care for herself. She would also like to see more clients receive reflexology, Reiki, and Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) on a regular rotating schedule, allowing the services to complement one another as part of their overall wellness care.

In the future, she plans to explore membership options that include all three services, making it easier and more convenient for clients to incorporate ongoing care into their lives.

The goal is not simply to fill every available appointment.

It is to build a sustainable practice where clients feel supported and where Maegan can continue offering that care without losing the balance she has worked so hard to find.

What She Wants Every Client to Know

When asked what she would most want people to know about her, Maegan does not begin by listing her qualifications or services.

She begins with safety.

“I would really want people to know that they are safe with me as a practitioner,” she says. “I will always show up authentically. I will never claim to know something that I don’t, and I will never claim to ‘fix’ anyone.”

She wants clients to know they will be met without judgment. Her role is to support, listen, share information when she can, and help people find trusted resources when she doesn't yet have the answer.

That honesty is part of the trust she works to build.

It is also a reflection of what she valued most during her own training: being heard, supported, and cared for without pressure or judgment.

Her Advice for Future Practitioners

For anyone considering training with By the Moon, Maegan's advice is wholehearted, “Go for it.”

She believes that simply feeling drawn to this kind of work may be worth paying attention to.

“If this is something that you are considering, that is special,” she says. “It could be calling you to it, and it is incredibly fulfilling.”

Even for someone who does not yet know whether they will build a professional practice, she believes the experience can have a lasting personal impact.

“At the very least, you will have amazing training on how to help regulate your own nervous system.

It will help you see the world and yourself through a more compassionate lens.”

For Maegan, the training became far more than a qualification. It changed how she understood herself, how she cared for her family, how she listened to others, and ultimately, how she wanted to spend her working life.

Her story began with a tired new mother searching for a way to support her baby.

Today, that journey has grown into a full-time practice devoted to helping women feel safe, heard, supported, and a little lighter than when they arrived.
