Becoming a doula is meaningful, skilled work. Like any professional path, it requires an investment in education, mentorship, and practice.
Because doula care is not government regulated in Canada, tuition can vary widely between schools.
Programs may look similar on the surface while offering very different levels of depth, support, and long-term preparation.
After supporting fertility and pregnancy clients since 2004 and training doulas since 2010, I’ve seen how confusing it can feel to compare options.
In this article, I want to help you understand what influences cost, what doulas are really paying for, and how to evaluate value, not just price.
What Is the Typical Cost of Doula Training in Canada?
Most doula training programs fall somewhere within a broad range depending on:
certifications included
whether learning is self-paced or live
access to instructors
practicum expectations
business education
community and mentorship
additional certifications included
The right choice depends on your goals, learning style, and the kind of professional you want to become.
Why Do Doula Training Prices Vary So Much?
Two programs might both say “doula certification,” but what happens inside them can be very different.
For example:
A weekend course will naturally cost less than a program that includes months of guided learning.
A self-study course will cost less than one with live seminars and instructor feedback.
A training that focuses only on birth will cost less than a program preparing you to support fertility, postpartum, and loss as well.
Programs that include business education, mentorship, and continuing support typically cost more upfront but may save students from needing additional training later.
What Are You Actually Paying For?
This is the most important question.
You are not simply buying a certificate.
You are investing in:
professional confidence
communication skills
ethical foundations
the ability to support families in complex moments
guidance when situations feel uncertain
a community you can lean on
preparation to build real income
A strong education shortens the distance between wanting to do this work and feeling capable of doing it well.
A Pattern I’ve Seen Over the Years
I have watched many students choose the least expensive option available, only to discover later that they still felt unprepared to find clients, handle difficult conversations, or grow a stable practice.
Often they return for additional mentorship or further education.
Choosing thoughtfully the first time can reduce stress, expense, and self-doubt in the long run.
Tuition at By the Moon
At By the Moon, we offer education designed to be thorough, practical, and supportive while still remaining accessible.
Because we are a Canada Revenue Agency Certified Educational Institution, there is no tax on tuition, and Canadian students receive a T2202 form for tuition tax credits.
Holistic Full Spectrum Doula Training
Tuition: $1450 CAD
This program prepares students to support families through:
fertility and conception
pregnancy
birth
postpartum
pregnancy and infant loss
Rather than training for only one stage, students graduate ready to meet clients wherever they are in the reproductive journey.
Holistic Reproductive Practitioner Training
Tuition: $2950 CAD
This multi-certification pathway includes:
Holistic Full Spectrum Doula
Foot and Hand Reflexology
Fertility & Maternity Reflexology
Holy Fire III Usui Reiki 1 & 2
Fertility & Maternity Reiki
Holistic Business Building
The combined standalone value exceeds $4200.
Graduates are prepared to offer doula services as well as reflexology and Reiki, meaning they can support a wider range of clients and build multiple streams of income.
Will I Make My Money Back?
Many doulas recover their tuition within their first several clients, especially when they are trained to offer services across multiple stages of reproductive life.
The more ways you can help people, the more stable your business can become.
This is one of the reasons we include business development in every program.
Payment Plans
Flexible payment options are available to make training more manageable. Details can be found on each program page.
What Happens After Graduation?
Students are never simply handed a certificate and sent away.
We offer continued opportunities for learning, mentorship, community connection, and professional growth so graduates can keep developing their confidence and skills.
